El Calafate

In El Calafate you will find yourself at the gateway to the majestic world of glaciers. This town is near Lake Argentino , a green water surface covering 1600 km2, with a length of 60 km ., a width between 12 and 14 km ., and depths from 35 m . in Feruglio on the coast and centre, to 300 m . in the Avellaneda Peninsula. El Calafate presents a dry climate, with an average maximum temperature of 19ºC, and an average minimum in winter of -2º. In summer the sun rises at 5.30am and sets at 11pm. In winter the day is shorter, there are only 8 hours of light. El Calafate is the main supplier of the area, a city of around 8,000 inhabitants on a surface of 155,000 hectares , with rivers and creeks draining into the Atlantic Ocean through the Santa Cruz River . Los Glaciares National Park covers a surface of some 600,000 hectares with 47 glaciers, such as the Marconi, the Viedma, the Moyano, the Upsala, the Agassiz, the Bolado, the Onelli, the Peineta, the Spegazzini, the Mayo, the Ameghino, the Moreno and the Frías, all of them draining into the Atlantic . From El Calafate, you can go on excursions by bus or in modern ships. Tours and outings to the classical viewpoint of the Perito Moreno Glacier or the audacious expeditions to cross the glaciers can be organized. The International Airport of El Calafate, inaugurated on 17th November, 2000, receives direct flights from Buenos Aires , Trelew, Bariloche, Puerto Natales, and other cities.

Day-by-day Itinerary

DAY 1 Buenos Aires / Puerto Madryn
Flight to Trelew. Arrival. Reception and transfer to Punta Tombo, located at 120 km from Trelew on the oceanfront, where the most important continental colony of Magallanic penguins is located, with one million of these charming animals coming together. Transfer to Puerto Madryn.

Overnight at Tolosa Hotel.

DAY 2 Puerto Madryn
Breakfast. Full day tour to Peninsula Valdés, Caleta Valdes or Punta Delgada Fauna Reserve, continental habitat of the sea elephant. You will meet with these large mammals whose name comes from its striking proboscis (weight between 1 to 6 tons and about 6 mts long). Visit to sea lion colony in Punta Piramide where you can also see sea lion rockery.

Overnight at Tolosa Hotel.

DAY 3 Puerto Madryn / Ushuaia
Breakfast. Transfer to the Airport to depart to Ushuaia. Arrival. Afternoon City tour to visit the most interesting sites of the most southern city in the world located at the shore of Beagle Channel and the background of the Andes Mountains Range . Visit to the End of the World Museum . Return to the hotel.

Overnight at Las Hayas Resort Hotel.

DAY 4 Ushuaia
Breakfast. Visit to Tierra del Fuego National Park visiting Río Pipo Valley , a rich area in fauna and flora, Ensenada Bay , lakes and lagoons. In the afternoon depart form Ushuaia bay by Catamaran though the Beagle Channel visiting Paso Chico, Bridges Island, De los Pajaros Island and De los Lobos Island and Les Eclaireus lighthouse where you will see seals and a great variety of sea birds. Return to the Hotel.

DAY 5 Ushuaia / El Calafate
Breakfast. Transfer to the airport, for flight departure to El Calafate. Arrival. Reception and Transfer to the hotel.

Overnight at Pousada Los Alamos.

DAY 6 El Calafate
Breakfast. Departure by bus along the beautiful road by the coast of Lake Argentino, arrival to Los Glaciares National Park and the spectacular Perito Moreno Glacier one of the largest active continental glaciers in the world. Walk around the area to admire the beauty of the glacier from different point and enjoy the thunder noise of huge masses of ice falling into the lake. This Glacier was declared UNESCO world heritage. Return to Hotel.

DAY 7 El Calafate
Breakfast-Day at leisure.

DAY 8 El Calafate
Breakfast. Transfer to the airport of El Calafate to depart to another destination.
