El Calafate

In El Calafate you will find yourself at the gateway to the majestic world of glaciers. This town is near Lake Argentino , a green water surface covering 1600 km2, with a length of 60 km ., a width between 12 and 14 km ., and depths from 35 m . in Feruglio on the coast and centre, to 300 m . in the Avellaneda Peninsula. El Calafate presents a dry climate, with an average maximum temperature of 19ºC, and an average minimum in winter of -2º. In summer the sun rises at 5.30am and sets at 11pm. In winter the day is shorter, there are only 8 hours of light. El Calafate is the main supplier of the area, a city of around 8,000 inhabitants on a surface of 155,000 hectares , with rivers and creeks draining into the Atlantic Ocean through the Santa Cruz River . Los Glaciares National Park covers a surface of some 600,000 hectares with 47 glaciers, such as the Marconi, the Viedma, the Moyano, the Upsala, the Agassiz, the Bolado, the Onelli, the Peineta, the Spegazzini, the Mayo, the Ameghino, the Moreno and the Frías, all of them draining into the Atlantic . From El Calafate, you can go on excursions by bus or in modern ships. Tours and outings to the classical viewpoint of the Perito Moreno Glacier or the audacious expeditions to cross the glaciers can be organized. The International Airport of El Calafate, inaugurated on 17th November, 2000, receives direct flights from Buenos Aires , Trelew, Bariloche, Puerto Natales, and other cities.

Day-by-day Itinerary

Day 1 Buenos Aires
Arrival in Buenos Aires and transfer from International Airport to the Alvear Palace Hotel.

A three and a half hour sightseeing tour visiting: Plaza de Mayo, Government House, Cathedral, Columbus Square, La Boca district, San Martín Square, Santa Fé Avenue, Recoleta Cemetery, Grand Bourg Square, Palermo Chico district, Polo grounds, Horse Race Track, Palermo Park, Rose Garden, Libertador Avenue, Congress Hall, 9 de Julio Avenue, and the famous Colon Theatre Opera House.

Day 2 Buenos Aires / Bariloche
Breakfast and transfer from Hotel to domestic airport to take a flight to Bariloche.

Arrival in Bariloche and transfer to Kenton Hotel

Small Circuit Tour with Cerro Campanario: This circuit is a traditional option that takes only half a day. All along the way, you will be accompanied by it as well as by the Andean peaks. At kilometers 8 Playa Bonita. The island you'll see is called Isla Huemul. Than Bahía Serena, a protected beach area. You can make a stop at the chairlift of Cerro Campanario, which will let you have a magnificent view. As you continue you will reach the entrance to the San Pedro Peninsula and Llao Llao peninsula. The road goes across the Angostura River with beaches at both sides. Further on is Mount Lopez . Then come the orchards of the Swiss settlers, the panoramic point and Laguna El Trebol.

Day 3 Bariloche
Breakfast at the hotel and start the Big Circuit Tour: Departing from Bariloche and going along Limay River , we reach Anfiteatro, a natural formation that is similar to a Roman amphitheatre. Later we reach Valle Encantado, where we will be able to see strange rocky shapes. Further ahead and going along Cuyín, Manzano and Minero rivers and through cohiues woods, we have access to Traful 'mirador' view point. This is a cliff of more than 70 m . above the lake from where the views are really amazing. Afterwards, Villa Traful ( Traful Village ). Resuming with the journey we reach Arrayán port and El Portezuelo and then we go back taking Camino de los Siete Lagos ( Seven Lakes Way ) until we reach the beautiful Villa La Angostura.

Day 4 Bariloche
Breakfast.

Puerto Blest Tour and Lago Frias Navigation: This trip begins at Pto. Pañuelo on the Llao Llao peninsula. The boat navigates along the long and narrow Blest Arm. From the start and all along the way the landscape is spectacular: thick forest, imposing mountain peaks, transparent glacial waters. After sailing for an hour, the boat reaches Pto. Cántaros at Bahía Blest. You are now within the Valdivian Jungle due to the fact that it is one of the places, which receives heavier rainfalls: 3000 mm per year. Enormous trees like the coihue and alerce inhabit this jungle; a bushy grove crowded with creepers and liana and, thanks to the dampness, a proliferation of herbs, ferns, moss and fungi. Don't miss the timber-lined path, which takes you to Laguna and Cascada Los Cántaros. This last one is the starting point towards the international pass Perez Rosales. At Puerto Blest there is an area designed to help you interpret how the local species grow. You will probably hear the roar of Río Frías. This river begins at Lago Frias and carries its milky waters into the Nahuel Huapi Lake creating and emerald green hue in all the surrounding area. Lake Frias can be navigated for 40 minutes to arrive in Puerto Frias where the road towards the international pass begins.

Day 5 Bariloche / El Calafate
Breakfast and transfer from Hotel to Bariloche Airport to taka a flight to El Calafate.

Day 6 El Calafate
Breakfast and Full Day Moreno Glacier Tour: Moreno Glacier is the most important of the 13 glaciers in Los Glaciares National Park and a worldly known attraction for the incredible breaking of the ice. Along your way you will pass by Cerro de los Elefantes and then arrive at the access gate to the National Park. Then you will see Brazo Rico of Lake Argentino on your left and the first forests of lengas, cypresses, guindos, calafates and alerces, and if you are lucky, you may also see some grey fox, guanaco, armadillo, red fox or puma. After Curva de los Suspiros (photograph) where you will see the glacier for the first time, and contemplate astonished this 70 m . ice wall of a thousand blue tones. You can reach the glacier walking while following the signs on the trails and viewpoints, and you will feel in your skin the unique sensation of the glacier. Nature here offers a unique experience of infinite peace, unpolluted air, and the silence of immensity only interrupted by the movement of the glacier when its immense blocks of ice fall in Canal de los Témpanos in an astounding clamor.

Day 7 El Calafate
Breakfast and Full Day Upsalla Onelli Navigation: To get to these glaciers we will embark at Punta Bandera to navigate through the northern branch of lake Argentino to get to Glacier Upsala and Onelli Bay , where the catamaran stops for three hours. Upsala Glacier forms an ice spit of some 60 km . long and 10 km . wide and constitutes the biggest glacier in the area. Its surface is approximately 595 km², about three times as big as Buenos Aires . Navigation goes on until Onelli Bay , where passengers disembark and go for a short walk through the forest until Onelli Bay , where glaciers Onelli, Bolados, Agassiz and Heim meet. During the hike you will enjoy these beautiful landscapes with a variety of shapes and colors in the immense icebergs detached from Upsala Glacier. The navigation continues to Spegazzini Glacier, amazing for its high walls reaching 110 mt. On the way back condors might be seen.

Day 8 El Calafate / Buenos Aires
Breakfast and transfer to El Calafate Airport.

Arrival in Buenos Aires and transfer to NH Florida Hotel.

Dinner and Tango Show at Esquina Carlos Gardel: The Tango is part of the typical music of Buenos Aires . This tour will be to enjoy a special "porteña" music night at one of the excellent tango places, where typical songs and dances are performed.
