Patagonia, Chile

This region stretches out from the southern part of Puerto Montt to the Island of Tierra del Fuego. The colonization period was long and dangerous, due to the extreme weather conditions. The rain season, the low temperatures and the cold wind, makes this part of the world one of the hardest and severe places to live. Due to its conditions, it is often called the "green desert", name given by the explorer Charles Darwin.

Day-by-day Itinerary

Day 1

Reception in the Balmaceda airport. Begin tour through the Aysen region, crossing 45 minutes of Patagonian pampas to reach the city of Coyhaique. Along the way you are likely to spot pairs of caiquenes (wild goose) and flocks of bandurrias (storks) through the tall grasses. The vast remains of burned over forests are vestiges of the region's recent colonization period. Short visit to the city, and then you continue along the Austral Road to the Termas de Puyuhuapi Hotel and Spa (5 hrs). Much of the trip is along a gravel road that passes through extraordinary landscapes of dense forests between mountains and cliffs. In the afternoon you arrive at the hotels Pier and then cross the Puyuhuapi Channel by motorboat in just 10 minutes. Welcome!

Day 2 to 4

Full-day fly fishing. Your access to all waters is by means of inflatable semi-rigid boats, powered by heavy-duty late-model outboard motors. Travel time from the lodge to the rivers can take from 15 minutes to 1- ½ hours (one way) depending on the river chosen.
Gourmet lunch, appetizers, soft drinks and liquors, and the best of Chilean wines are provided. Trips will be organized around a maximum of two fly fishermen, fly-fishing guide and boatman.
The cousy hotel offers thermal outdoor pools at the edge of the sea, footpaths for walks through the cold forest, visits to the Queulat National Park with its Hanging Glacier, easy bicycle trips along the Austral Road, or, if you wish, you can explore the Dorita Bay in boats or kayaks.
The Spa's facilities are complete. Enjoy its large hydromassage pool, jacuzzis, spring-water fountain, and steam sauna, and then reap the benefits of thalassotherapy sessions, relaxation massages, and facial and other treatments.

Day 5

Your day begins early. At 7:00 am you board the Patagonia Express catamaran and begin your journey through the austral fjords on your way to the San Rafael Lagoon. The 7-hour trip is a sheer delight to the senses: the transparency of the waters, the majesty of the Andes Mountains wrapped in lush forests, the play of light interwoven through the clouds, and sometimes... encounters with playful dolphins. Sailing through a number of channels, you finally reach the Tempanos River, which leads us to the San Rafael Lagoon, home to a millenarian glacier. Experience it!
After a visit of approximately 2 hours, you begin your return trip, arriving in Puerto Chacabuco around 10:30 pm, where you will be transferred to the hotel in this port.

Day 6

After breakfast, your bus takes you back along the route that follows the Simpson River, from Chacabuco to Coyhaique and then on to the airport in Balmaceda (approx. 2 hours).

Each day includes:
Full-day fly-fishing with one guide per one or two anglers.
Arrival and departure days are non-fishing.
