Manu National Park, Peru

Located in the rainforest of the Cuzco and Madre de Dios departments, Manu National Park is Peru´s greatest natural treasure. It is a trove for the number of species it shelters and the diversity of ecosystems it features. Established in 1973 over a land surface of 1,532,806 hectares, it was included in UNESCO´s list of Mankind´s Natural Heritages in 1987. It compromises the whole of the Manu River Basin as well as an extraordinary cross-section of altitudes ranging from 4,300m in the Andean High Plateau to 200m in the Amazon Floodplain.

Day-by-day Itinerary

Day 1
Early in the morning transfer to the airport for a short flight in a small charter plane to Boca Manu. At arrival you will join the rest of the group, who traveled by bus and continue to Limonal where you will camp along the riverbank at the Park Rangers Headquarters. Short walk around the area.

Day 2 to 3
You will follow the Manu River until we arrive to Salvador Lake, your base campsite. From this vantage point you will have great views of riverside birds, sunbathing caiman, and the enormous capybara. For these two days you will hike through virgin forest and explore, by canoe. You will often see animals sunning themselves on beaches, or foraging for food in the trees lining the riverbanks.

Day 4
Once again you will wake up early, enjoy a brief morning walk, eat a relaxing breakfast, then pack up camp and descend the Manu River until Boca Manu. This village is situated a short distance from the confluence of the Manu River with the Alto Madre de Dios River, from here you descend the Madre de Dios River. Early in the afternoon after three hours you will camp on a beach and spend one more night in this magical amazon jungle.

Day 5
After a very early wake up, you will board a camouflaged catamaran and go down the river to the "Collpa" macaw lick. You will quietly observe the various parrots feeding on the clay for mineral and salt supplements to their diet of seeds and fruits. The brightly colored macaws usually wait patiently in the surrounding trees until the smaller parrot species have left the area. Slowly, the macaws come down to the clay wall to feed. You need a lot of patience and silence on the catamaran so as not to disturb them as they eat the clay. Around mid morning you will board our canoe to return to the airstrip at Boca Manu and fly back to Cuzco.
