Ecuador Culture

The countries of South America have a strong cultural heritage that translates itself in the day-to-day life of the people. Ecuador is no different. With a population of more than 11,500,000, divided between mestizos, Indians, whites, and blacks that live in the north of the country, the Indians still maintain the ancient traditions and speak in their native tongue, Quéchua.

Inherited from the Incan civilization, Ecuador¹s way-of-life is expressed in their dances, the arts, music, and handicrafts. This artistic expression shown in the local workmanship traces the knowledge passed from generation-to-generation through the women and the exquisite details in each ceramic item they create.

One of the biggest popular celebrations in the Incan times, took place in June when the festival of the sun was celebrated.  This was a way of thanking God for the harvest.  Now, Corpus Christi is celebrated with a large procession to the sound of bombos (large Salasaca drums made of light, resistant wood) whose climax is the dances.

Ecuadorians are known for their hospitality and kindness. Each member of the population endeavors to make visitors feel right at home.
